ARTIST STATEMENT
Emma Shifren (b. 1996, New York, NY) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in New York City. Drawing freely from nature, Emma’s abstractions conjure the organic forms and inherent beauty found in the natural world. Although a New York City native, Emma finds herself happiest when active outdoors. As an avid hiker and traveler her body of work is directly inspired by the scenery that surrounds her. Figurative botanicals and skyscapes are a central theme to much of Emma’s work. Often using her hands in lieu of a brush, Emma’s distinguished painting practice reveals the raw materiality of her chosen materials, which range from acrylic and oil paint, to charcoal, spray paint, and gold leaf. Her oil gilding techniques mimic old masters’ practices and embody mirror like reflective qualities. Emma’s fascination with film photography is explored through her mixed media pieces. Combining black and white photographic images with gestural brushwork in vibrant hues, her practice oscillates between past and present, blurring the physical and metaphysical, documentary and fiction. Emma received her BA from Tulane University, New Orleans, LA (2018), prior to continuing her studies at The Art Students League, New York, NY (2022).
